If you’re planning a trip but are low on funds right now, we have good news for you — most hotels allow you to book in advance without charging your card at the time of booking. A few companies do charge deposit fees but state it clearly when booking your hotel room. Most charge either at check-in or check-out. Also, keep in mind that if you want to pay for your hotel room with cash, you’ll still need a card (some hotels do accept debit cards for the hold but will take a deposit upon reserving the room) to book the room, and you’ll almost always have to pay the full amount in cash at check in.

About Book Now Pay Later Hotel Aggregation Sites…

Here’s a quick note about hotel aggregation sites like Travelocity and Hotels.com that advertise as “book now, pay later.”  What they mean is most of the time you can book now and pay later but we won’t commit to telling you if it’s a possibility with a certain hotel until you start the booking process. This doesn’t make them bad sites, and you can certainly find some great deals on many of the hotels that don’t charge you until you arrive at the hotel. But you should be aware that not all hotels on those types of sites allow you to pay later. Read the fine print before submitting your credit card information as it could be charged right away. There are no book now pay later hotel sites that let you pay later all of the time with all hotels. We apologize for not being able to quickly point you to such sites.

In Summary

There are many such ‘book now pay later’ hotels. Because many hotels allow you to book a room for free, without charging you until check-in or check out.

Some companies vary their policies from location to location, so speaking with a front desk representative of the hotel you’re interested in will provide you with the most accurate policy information. It’s rare for a hotel to charge a deposit at the time of booking, and those that do will notify you before you book.
