How Many Stamps Are Necessary?

The cost to send a letter or an envelope is measured in actual dollars and cents, not in stamps. An individual stamp currently costs $0.49 (up from $0.47 in 2016). Essentially, that means that one stamp equates to $0.49 worth of postage. Even though the prices may fluctuate, the cost of mailing a one-ounce first-class letter is always the same as the cost of one first-class stamp.

The prices don’t necessarily go up in increments of $0.49. For example, you’ll notice that the prices sometimes increase by $0.21 at a time — but since standard stamps don’t come in increments of $0.21, you’ll normally have to round up to the nearest stamp.

Keep in mind that stamps don’t stay the same price forever, so if you have old stamps that were purchased when stamps cost $0.43, that stamp is worth only $0.43 in postage and won’t cover the cost of sending a first-class letter. (That’s why we recommend buying Forever stamps — they’ll always be worth as much as the current first-class stamp.)

For First-Class Mail Letters

  • $0.49 for the first ounce (and under) when purchased from USPS (one stamp)
  • $0.21 for each additional ounce, up to 3.54 ounces
  • Maximum dimensions of 6 1/8″ x 11 1/2″

For First-Class Mail Large Envelopes

  • $0.98 for the first ounce (and under) when purchased from USPS
  • $0.21 for each additional ounce, up to 13 ounces
  • Maximum dimensions of 12″ x 15″

In most cases, if you’re sending a simple card or letter, the weight will most likely be under one ounce and a single first-class stamp should cover you for domestic postage. Note that special rates apply for international postage.

Types of Stamps and Prices

Stamps are sold in several different units. Keep in mind that not all units are available at all locations, and the price could be higher when they’re purchased at a store instead of a post office. Here are the most common ways that you can purchase stamps and how much each unit typically costs:

  • Single stamps (individuals, $0.49)
  • Booklets (20 stamps, $9.80)
  • Rolls or coils (100 stamps, $49.00)

The Forever Stamp

  • Forever stamps cost the same as First-Class Mail letter stamps (currently $0.49)
  • Their value will always match the current price of mailing one first-class letter — if you purchase a Forever stamps for $0.49 in 2017,  but the price in 2019 rises to $0.51 per stamp, your Forever stamp is still the worth the price of the current first-class stamp.
  • A range of pack sizes and designs can be viewed here

First-Class Stamp

  • Only worth as much in postage as what you pay for it. (If you buy one for $0.49, it’s always worth $0.49, which might not always be enough to mail a letter.)

In Summary

Letters may be a little slower than sending a text or a Facebook message, but sooner or later, you’ll need (or want!) to send something by “snail mail.” Maybe you need to mail in a hard copy of an important bill or financial document, or maybe you just want to say a special “thank you” to someone with a handwritten card. Whatever the reason, now you know where to buy stamps. Even where to buy single stamps and buy stamps on Sunday since most of us only mail something on occasion.
