Short Answer
You may be able to return a new, uninstalled car battery within 45 days of purchase at Advance Auto Parts. Individual stores have discretion over whether to accept battery returns. Used and installed batteries are ineligible for return but may be eligible for replacement under warranty. For more details, see below.
Advance Auto Parts Battery Return Policy
Under Advance Auto Parts’ standard return policy, batteries are considered electrical parts and aren’t returnable unless covered by warranty.[1][2] However, individual stores have discretion over returns, and your local store may accept returns of batteries that are uninstalled and in new condition within 45 days.[1]
If your local store is willing to accept the return, you’ll need to show the receipt and a valid photo ID.[2] Advance Auto Parts is not able to look up receipts.[1] Returns can be processed at any time during regular store hours. Your refund will be issued to your original form of payment; if you paid with a credit card, you should bring the credit card you used with you.[2]
We confirmed this information with store associates at Advance Auto Parts locations in Arizona, Maine, North Dakota, Ohio, and Oregon.

Warranty Returns
DieHard and AutoCraft batteries sold at Advance Auto Parts have a one- to four-year limited warranty.[3] If your battery is within its warranty period and doesn’t work properly, you can file a warranty claim at your local Advance Auto Parts store.
Typically, a store associate will test the battery to determine whether or not it qualifies for a replacement. You can contact customer service at (877) 238-2623 for assistance if there isn’t an Advance Auto Parts store near you. All warranty claims require the original receipt and a manager’s approval.[1]
Online Orders
Note that even if you ordered a battery online, you’ll need to visit an Advance Auto Parts store to make a return or warranty claim; you cannot return a battery by mail.[1] You can find a copy of your receipt in your online account or in the original order confirmation email.[2]
Limited Returns
Advance Auto Parts tracks customer returns and can limit your returns and exchanges. Your ID will be used to track your return and exchange transactions. Accepted forms of ID include a driver’s license, state ID, military ID, permanent resident card, or border crossing card.[2]
