Can You Mobile Deposit a Money Order or Deposit It Online? Yes…

You can use mobile deposit for money orders with certain banks; however, not all banks offer this service.

You can also mobile deposit a money order if you have a PayPal Cash Plus account.

Note that MoneyGram prohibits mobile deposits of its money orders, regardless of the bank’s policy.

Below, we list the places that allow mobile deposits of money orders, plus those that don’t.

How to Use Mobile Deposit

While MoneyGram prohibits mobile deposits of its money orders,[1] you can use mobile deposit for other money orders.

Some (but not all) banks and credit unions allow account holders to deposit money orders through mobile deposit. The process for depositing a money order using a mobile app is the same as depositing a check.

The general steps are:

  • Sign the back of the money order and write your bank account number beneath your signature.
  • Open the mobile app and take photos of the front and back of the money order. Images must be clearly readable, and all four corners of the money order must be visible in the photos.
  • Follow the app’s on-screen instructions to finish submitting your deposit.

Some mobile apps may vary slightly, so it’s important to read the on-screen instructions on your bank’s or credit union’s mobile app before depositing a money order. Note that banks also set maximum limits on the amount you can deposit through their mobile apps.

In most cases, the funds from money orders deposited through a mobile banking app will not be immediately available.

Mobile deposit apps follow federal regulations, which state that deposits (including money orders) must be made available by the second or fifth day after deposit.[2][3]

Our research found that most banks will make up to about $200 of a money order deposit available by the next business day, with the remainder of the funds clearing in three to five business days.

If you don’t have an account with one of the banks listed above, you can deposit a money order online using the PayPal app and your PayPal Cash Plus account. The PayPal app includes a “Cash a Check” service that allows you to mobile deposit various check types, including money orders ranging from $5 to $5,000.[27]

If you’re willing to wait 10 days for processing, you can make a deposit for free;[28] instant processing is available for 5% of the money order amount (with a $5 minimum).[29] Once the money is added to your PayPal account balance, you can use it to pay for PayPal transactions or transfer it to your bank account.[30]

The PayPal app is available for iOS and Android. Note that you must have (or join) the Cash Plus account type to use the Cash a Check function.[31]

Places That Don’t Allow Mobile Deposits for Money Orders

The following banks and credit unions offer mobile deposit services for account holders — but not for money orders. We include information about how to deposit a money order at each bank.

Note that if using an ATM to deposit a money order, you’ll need to use an ATM owned by your bank rather than a third-party ATM (such as those inside of retail stores).
