11 Gas Stations That Take Checks Listed (+ Those That Don’t)

Some (but not all) gas stations take checks. Policies typically vary by location rather than applying companywide.

We investigated the largest gas station chains to find out whether they accept checks as payment.

The List

We contact the corporate customer service departments and individual locations of major gas station chains across the U.S., finding that the check-writing policy varies by location in most cases.

Most gas stations will accept checks at select locations, while others will only take them for specific purchase types (like diesel fuel) or will only accept specific check types (like company checks).

Gas stations will often post “No checks accepted” signage on the storefront or at the pump if that’s the policy — however, don’t assume that checks are accepted if you don’t see a sign. Because policies vary so widely, it’s best to contact the exact location you plan to visit to find its check-writing policy.

The following gas stations accept checks at a portion of their locations, at minimum (note that you can tap each store name to find and contact your nearest location):

If you’re also interested in paying by check at stores other than gas stations, such as restaurants, grocery stores, department stores, and more, see our list of stores that take checks.

I’ve found that Murphy gas stations (the ones near me are always the ones attached to Walmart) still accept checks.

      Hi Ryan,

I apologize for this omission in the article — you’re right that Kwik Trip generally accepts local checks. I reached out to Kwik Trip customer support and confirmed this information. I’ve updated the article accordingly. Thank you for bringing this to our attention!

When u say kwik trip is that the same as QT stations? Or is that a hole different chain of stations with the same name?

          Hi Yankee,

No, they’re different chains! QT is for Quik Trip, and they are distinct from Kwik Trip.

we went to a Gulf Station recently and they did not accept the check but they would give us $20 worth of gas and hold cell phone as collateral until we return with a card

      Hi Adam,

It definitely seems to be the norm that most gas stations are moving away from accepting paper checks these days. But I’m glad to hear you were able to get your situation taken care of. Thanks for writing in to share your experience!
