Does Hmart Accept EBT? Answered + Other Ways to Pay

Short Answer — Hmart accepts EBT, but only for in-store purchases of EBT-eligible items, not online orders.

Does Hmart Accept EBT?

You can pay with an Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card at any Hmart store.[1][2][3] However, you can’t pay for online Hmart orders with EBT.[4][5]

We confirmed this information with Hmart’s customer service department and the USDA’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) retailer locator.

We also contacted Hmart stores in California, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Michigan, Texas, and Virginia to confirm their payment options, and all of the stores I checked accept EBT.

EBT-Eligible Items

Hmart sells a wide variety of grocery items that you can purchase with your EBT card, including bread, meat, vegetables, fruit, packaged snacks, and dairy products.[6][2]

Note that you cannot buy alcohol, tobacco, over-the-counter medications, or household products with EBT.[7]

If your local Hmart has a food court, be aware that you also can’t buy prepared or hot meals with SNAP benefits.[7]

Our related research has more details on what you can and can’t buy with EBT.

Paying With EBT

EBT cards work with standard card readers, so you can pay at the register just as you would with a debit or credit card.[2]

If your order includes EBT-ineligible items or exceeds your EBT balance, you’ll need to split payment between your EBT card and another payment option.[2][8]

Aside from EBT, Hmart stores accept:[2]

  • Cash
  • Checks
  • Debit cards
  • Major credit cards
  • Major mobile wallets like Apple Pay

Payment Methods for Online Orders

As noted above, Hmart doesn’t accept EBT for online orders,[4][5] so if you prefer to shop online, you’ll need to use a different payment method.

The only acceptable payment options when shopping on Hmart.com are:[5]

  • Debit cards with a Mastercard or Visa logo
  • Major credit cards (American Express, Discover, Mastercard, and Visa)
  • PayPal
