As one of America’s oldest retailers, Macy’s has long been the go-to store for millions of Americans. Macy’s has also earned a reputation for having a liberal price matching policy.
But does it still offer price matching today? And if so, how does it work?
We explain what you need to know about price matching at Macy’s, including what to do to get the best price on your next purchase, whether it’s a food processor or a pair of designer jeans.
What Is Price Matching?
Price matching — when a retailer guarantees it will reimburse the dollar difference if you find that exact item for less at another store — has become more popular in recent years. Retailers like Macy’s use the technique to compete for customers. However, many shoppers don’t know that they can take advantage of this benefit.
Price matching and e-commerce wars among retailers of all sizes benefit you as a consumer — they enable you to pay the lowest fair price for the items you purchase, as determined by current supply and demand.
What Is Macy’s Price Match Policy?
Macy’s price matches with a select group of retailers. We were able to confirm the list by contacting their customer service department. Macy’s released its latest approved price matching retailer list on July 28, 2017.
If you buy a product at Macy’s but find it priced less at one of the stores on Macy’s approved list, you can request a price match within 10 days of purchase. You can request a price match at a Macy’s store or by contacting customer service at (800) 289-6229. You’ll need to provide your purchase order information and a link to the competitor’s website so Macy’s can verify your claim. If it’s exactly the same item, you will receive store credit or a refund for the difference. Refunds are made in the same form of payment you used to make the purchase. For example, if you paid for your purchase using a Macy’s credit card and found the item was being sold for $5 less through an approved retailer, Macy’s would credit your Macy’s card for $5.
The price matching policy also applies to items purchased on Macys.com. Note that the 10-day period begins when you place the order, not when you receive the item. As with in-store purchases, you can call customer service to request a price match.
The following stores are found on Macy’s approved price matching retailer list:
- Bon Ton
- Crate and Barrel
- Neiman Marcus
- Saks Fifth Avenue
- Sur La Table
- Williams Sonoma
Macy’s will not price match e-commerce stores like Amazon. Why not? Research shows more often than not Macy’s can’t afford to compete with Amazon’s prices. E-commerce giants like Amazon have lower overhead costs than brick and mortar stores, allowing them to set lower prices and still profit.
What Is Macy’s Price Adjustment Policy?
While price matching and price adjustment may sound like one and the same, they are actually two different services offered at Macy’s.
Price adjustment refers to receiving a credit or refund when the price of an item is lowered after you purchase it. For example, if you purchased a sweater for $50 and a few days later, the price of the sweater was lowered to $40, Macy’s would credit or refund you $10 to account for the change in price.
Macy’s price adjustment policy allows you to receive a credit/refund based on:
- An inflated initial charge due to incorrect prices, fees, or other mistakes
- Unused coupons and seasonal promotions
- A recent price reduction on the same item at Macy’s
Like price matching, you have 10 days from the date of purchase (if you bought on Macys.com, that’s the date you placed the order, and not the date you received the item) to request a price adjustment. You’ll be refunded in the same way you paid for the purchase.
Keep in mind that Macys.com and Macy’s stores operate separately and do not necessarily offer the same products, prices, discounts, and rewards. As such, you won’t be able to use an online discount code to get a price adjustment for something you bought in store, or vise versa.
