Short Answer
Shell stations are independently owned, so policies vary, but you can usually get up to $40 cash back on debit card or check purchases.
Shell Cash Back Policy
Most Shell gas stations offer cash back. However, Shell stations are independently owned, so not all of them will participate in cash back, and those that do may differ slightly in their policies.
We called various Shell stations and learned that you can usually get up to $40 in cash back from any purchase as low as $0.01, and there’s no fee.
Shell stations usually accept debit and checks as viable payment methods for cash back, although some stores are unable to accept checks. If you need more than $40, you’ll have to make multiple transactions.
Though there is technically no limit to the number of transactions you can make in one day, it’s unlikely that Shell will allow you to make enough transactions to get a large sum of money as cash back, since their cash registers don’t hold much cash. If you need a lot of cash, you’ll probably be referred to the store’s ATM machine (if there is one).
Most gas stations will only give small amounts of cash back (usually $10 to $40) and generally only for purchases made with debit cards. To compare your options, see our list of gas stations that do cash back.
