Short Answer
Smart & Final accepts EBT for in-store purchases, but not for delivery. You can only use EBT for qualifying food items — not things like household cleaning products.
Does Smart & Final Take EBT?
Smart & Final accepts EBT at all of its store locations, a corporate customer service representative said. We confirmed this information by checking the USDA’s list of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)-approved retailers.
Note that you cannot use EBT for Smart & Final’s grocery delivery service. Additionally, Smart Foodservice Warehouse Stores (Smart & Final’s chain that sells goods to restaurants) do not accept EBT.
EBT-Eligible Items
You can purchase a wide variety of foods with your EBT card at Smart & Final. Baked goods, cereal, packaged snacks, candy, spices, dairy products, fruits, vegetables, and meats are just some of the items you can purchase with your SNAP benefits. See our full list of what you can and can’t buy with EBT.
Using EBT at Smart & Final
An EBT card works similarly to a debit or credit card; you can use it with the store’s standard card reader. Note that if your order includes items that are not eligible for EBT, such as household cleaning products, you will need to split your payment. Use your EBT card first; you can then pay for the remainder of your purchase (the EBT-ineligible items) using cash, a credit card, or a debit card.
