Is Walmart Gas Good? Is It TOP TIER? Answered

Walmart gas station

Short Answer — Walmart does not sell TOP TIER gas. The company operates unbranded gas stations, meaning its fuel comes from various undisclosed suppliers. While there are federal regulations regarding fuel quality and gas station maintenance, Walmart does not disclose its specific gasoline formulation or maintenance procedures.

Walmart Gas Quality

TOP TIER gasoline is considered the standard for high-quality fuel, with a formulation of deposit control additives that are proven to help car engines run cleaner and more efficiently.

Walmart does not sell TOP TIER gas, and its customer service representatives are not able to provide details about the ingredients and additives in its gasoline.

Note that while Walmart gasoline is not TOP TIER certified, it must still meet the quality regulations set forth by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Walmart sells its gas at prices that are typically lower than its competitors. However, according to a study conducted by the American Automobile Association (AAA), purchasing high-quality and TOP TIER gas for your car may be worth paying a few extra cents per gallon.

We know that Walmart cut ties with its gasoline provider, Murphy USA, in 2016. Since this time, Walmart has been working to expand its gas stations at Walmart and Sam’s Club stores.

Since Walmart’s gas stations do not sell gasoline branded by a major fuel retailer, the company is able to source its fuel from multiple suppliers and shop around for the best price; however, Walmart does not disclose its current fuel suppliers.

Walmart Gas Station Maintenance

Prior to 2016, Walmart’s gas stations were maintained by Murphy USA, which explains that its stations are inspected by regulatory agencies, undergo regular maintenance and testing, and are monitored at all hours.

Since its split with Murphy USA, Walmart has not released information about the maintenance standards for its gas stations.

At the very least, Walmart must abide by local, state, and federal regulations; the Retail Compliance Center provides more information about requirements for how gas stations are to manage underground storage tanks, spills, and used filters and oil.

However, it is worth noting that in 2017 — shortly after the company’s split from Murphy USA — there was at least one report of a Walmart supplier putting diesel fuel into an unleaded tank. Having multiple fuel suppliers may lead to inconsistencies in maintenance standards.
