You can cash payroll checks, tax refund checks, and government checks up to $2,000 at Kmart. And, you can cash personal checks and two-party checks up to $500. Kmart Check Cashing Policy
Kmart stores will cash payroll checks, tax refund checks, and government checks up to $2,000 and personal and two-party checks up to $500, a corporate customer service representative said.
We also contacted Kmart stores in Florida and New York to confirm this information; stores reported various limits and requirements and one store said it only cashes payroll checks.

Check Cashing Fees
Kmart check cashing fees vary by location, but you can expect to pay $5 or less. Kmart stores in New Jersey cash checks for free. For specific fee information, contact your local Kmart.
Accepted Forms of ID
The following forms of identification are accepted at Kmart when cashing a check:
- Driver’s license
- State ID
- U.S. military ID
- U.S. passport
- Matricula Consular ID (Consular Identification Card)
- Tribal ID
- Green Card
Other Requirements
Several store associates told us that you need to be a Kmart rewards member to cash a check. It’s free to sign up for Kmart Shop Your Way rewards; you can sign up online or in-store.
Check Verification

Check Cashing Hours
Kmart’s check cashing hours vary by location. We contacted several stores during evening hours to ask about check cashing.
On more than one occasion, we were told that the store was unable to cash any more checks that day; store associates advised visiting before 5 p.m. to cash a check.
