Liquor Stores That Cash Checks: 15 Stores to Choose From

Short Answer: While liquor license laws restrict most liquor stores from offering money services like check cashing, there are plenty of grocery stores that sell liquor and can cash checks. Stores that offer this service include Albertsons, Kroger, Safeway, and Walmart. Below, we list the stores that both sell liquor and cash checks, as well as information about fees, limits, and the types of checks each store will cash.

Liquor Stores That Cash Checks

The vast majority of independent liquor stores do not offer check cashing services. Liquor license laws (and variations in such laws between cities and states) make it difficult for liquor stores to also offer any money services, including check cashing. Additionally, there are very few multi-state liquor store chains, let alone nationwide chains, because of the difficulty of dealing with wide variations in state liquor sales licenses.

In fact, 17 states are “alcohol beverage control” (ABC) states, meaning that the sale of liquor is controlled by government agencies at the wholesale level. According to the National Alcohol Beverage Control Association (NABCA), which represents ABC states, 13 of these states also control retail sales through government-operated liquor stores or designated agents. Eight ABC states don’t allow liquor sales in grocery stores at all. You can find more about alcohol sales in each ABC state at the NABCA website.

Stores That Sell Liquor and Cash Checks

If you want to cash a check and buy alcohol in the same trip, your best bet is one of the many grocery stores that sell liquor and also cash checks. These stores are often open on nights and weekends, and some are even open 24 hours. Keep in mind that store policies for alcohol sales, including days of the week and times of day during which alcohol can be purchased, also vary according to city and state laws. For example, some do not sell alcohol on Sundays.

To avoid lines and banking fees we cash our payroll checks at Walmart. Two issues we have come across: firstly, the Walmart scanner cannot read the check and therefore will not be cashed, secondly, staff are not consistent with the rules, today they will cash the check if your ID address does not match the check, the next day they will not, this rule depends on the day and the staff working so we go back a different day and time. Overall it’s a great service which we like since banks nickel and dime you just for walking in the door.
