Macy’s Perfume Return Policy Explained (Even If Used)

Macy's fragrance and cosmetics department

Short Answer — Macy’s allows fragrance returns within 90 days of in-store or online purchase, with the exception of Last Act and final sale perfumes and colognes. Fragrances should be in new or gently used condition. With the receipt, you’ll be refunded to your original payment method. With a gift receipt, you’ll receive store credit. Without proof of purchase, you’ll likely receive store credit for the item’s lowest sale price in the last 180 days.

Macy’s Perfume & Cologne Return Policy

Macy’s accepts returns and exchanges of in-store and online fragrance purchases. In-store and online perfume and cologne purchases can be returned to any Macy’s store within 90 days of purchase.

Last Act and final sale items are an exception to this rule; neither can be returned.[1] We confirmed this information with Macy’s corporate customer service department.

Item Condition

The fragrance should be in new and unopened condition or “gently used” to qualify for a return or exchange, according to Macy’s cosmetic and fragrance return policy.

If you try the fragrance and find that you don’t care for the scent or you have an allergic reaction to it, you can return it.

Gently used means the perfume or cologne should only have been sprayed one or two times, a customer service representative said.

Proof of Purchase

In order to receive a full refund to your original payment method, you’ll need to present or include the receipt, packing slip, or shipping label.[2]

If you don’t have the receipt and you made an in-store purchase with a debit or credit card, a Macy’s store associate at the location where you made the purchase may be able to look up your transaction.[2]

If you don’t have the packing slip or shipping label from your online order, Macy’s online customer service can help you look up your order using your email address or the order number.[2]

Returns made without a receipt are subject to a store manager’s approval, require a valid photo ID, and will likely be issued in the form of store credit in the amount of the item’s lowest sale price in the last 180 days; exchanges are not permitted without proof of purchase.[2]

If you have a gift receipt or the shipping label from a gift, you should be able to get a full refund in the form of store credit.

However, if the purchase was made with Macy’s Star Money rewards points, you’ll only be able to receive a merchandise credit for in-store use.[3]

Online orders can also be returned by mail. To initiate a return by mail, sign in to your Macys.com account or contact Macy’s customer service at (800) 289-6229.

As long as your return is within Macy’s guidelines, you should be able to print a free prepaid return shipping label to complete your online return. Keep in mind, original shipping charges will not be refunded and fragrances cannot be exchanged by mail.[4]

Refunds

Refunds for in-store returns are processed the same day but may take three to five business days to be reflected in your account.[5]

Refunds for online returns by mail are processed within 10 days of when the item is received.[2]

During my visit to New York I purchased perfume from Macy’s. But now I returned back to Washington. I’m allergic to the scent. Can I return or exchange it in DC? I paid via debit card, and I don’t have the receipt.

Hello, Omid! Great question! We reached out to Macy’s and were told that you can return or exchange items at any Macy’s location. You do not have to visit the same store where you made your purchase. We have updated our article to include this information. Best of luck with your return!
