PLS check cashing fees vary by the type of check you’re cashing and your state’s regulations.

Personal checks, payroll checks, and tax refund checks are among the most common checks cashed at PLS.

PLS Check Cashing Fees, Rates, etc

PLS will make an attempt to cash every check brought in, but fees will vary based on the type of check and other factors, PLS store managers said.

On its website, PLS gives an overview of the types of checks it will cash — from personal checks to government checks and many more.

PLS’ store policy is to verify each check by contacting the issuing bank. Once the check has been verified, it will be cashed in accordance with state guidelines. If a check cannot be verified, it cannot be cashed at PLS.

We spoke with customer service representatives at various PLS locations to find out about its check cashing fees and requirements for each check type.

Personal Checks

  • Check cashing fee: In most states, fees will vary based on the type and amount of the check.
  • Requirements: A valid, government-issued photo ID

Paychecks

  • Check cashing fee: For in-state checks that recur, checks up to a certain amount (usually between $1,000 and $1,500, depending on the state) will be charged a fee of 1% of the check amount plus $1. All other paycheck fees will vary based on the type and amount of the check.
  • Requirements: A valid, government-issued photo ID

Government Checks (e.g., Benefit Checks, Tax Refund Checks)

  • Check cashing fee: In many states, fees of 1% of the check amount plus $1 are assessed for government checks up to $1,500. In other states, fees are system-generated based on the check amount.
  • Requirements: A valid, government-issued photo ID

  • Check cashing fee: Fees are system-generated. In New York, fees for business checks can be up to 5% of the check amount.
  • Requirements: A valid, government-issued photo ID; business customers are urged to call ahead to avoid lines at the store

  • Requirements: A valid, government-issued photo ID

Cashier’s Checks

  • Check cashing fee: Fees for are based on the amount of the cashier’s check
  • Requirements: A valid, government-issued, photo ID
