Short Answer — REI allows returns of new bikes within one year of purchase and used cycling products within 30 days. You can ride a bike before returning it, but you’ll need to provide the original receipt.

REI Bike Return Policy

REI allows new bike returns within one year of purchase with the receipt.[1][2]

You can return used bikes and cycling products (such as tires, mounts, and seats) within 30 days, and you must return bike trainers within 90 days.[1]

There are no extended return periods for holidays or REI Co-op members.[2]

Additionally, note that all Garage Sale purchases are “as is”/final sale, meaning you can’t return them.[1]

Requirements

As noted above, bike returns at REI require the original receipt. If you don’t have the receipt, but you’re an REI member, or you purchased the bike online, the store may be able to look up your purchase.[2]

You should also provide the original packaging and/or tags, if available, and all accessories that came with the bike.[3]

You can ride the bike before returning it; REI accepts used and defective returns and can resell bikes that show signs of wear as used gear.[2]

However, note that you can’t return a bike solely because of normal wear and tear, and REI’s Satisfaction Guarantee doesn’t cover bikes damaged by accidents and improper use.[1]

Return Process

Whether you bought your bike at a store or online, you can return it to any REI store location.[2][4]

Bring the bike, all available packaging and tags, and proof of purchase to the store’s customer service desk any time during regular store hours.[3]

In most cases, you’ll receive a refund to your original payment method,[2] but if you paid online with PayPal, you’ll receive your refund via cash or check.[3] There are no restocking fees.[2]

Note that REI may deny your return if you have a history of making excessive returns. Store management has discretion over when to accept and refuse returns.[2]

Mail-In Returns

Because they’re oversized and require assembly, bikes aren’t eligible for return by mail through REI’s online return process.[5][2]

You can return a bike by mail by working directly with a shipping carrier. However, because in-store returns are free, the representatives we spoke with recommended returning your bike to an REI store.[2][4]
