Short Answer

If you aren’t satisfied with your REI shoe purchase, you can return the shoes for a refund or replacement within one year of purchase. Shoes can be worn before return, but the reason for return should be something other than normal wear and tear, such as improper fit.

REI’s return policy allows for returns of most items, including shoes, within one year of purchase.

We contacted REI’s corporate customer service department and store locations in North Carolina and Oregon to confirm this information.

Shoe Return Requirements at REI

Shoes can be worn before return — as long as the reason for the return is other than normal wear and tear.

This means that you can return shoes that don’t hold up as expected, don’t fit properly, or are unsatisfactory for other reasons.

To return shoes at REI, you’ll need to have the original sales receipt — unless you are an REI Co-op member, in which case a store associate can look up your purchase.

Returning shoes in the original shoe box is preferred but not necessary, REI employees said.

REI Shoe Refunds

When you return your shoes, you will be issued a refund for your purchase, or an REI store associate can help you find a replacement pair that works better for you.

REI issues refunds to the original form of payment in most cases. However, there are a few exceptions:

  • Online orders with PayPal will receive a refund to PayPal if returning by mail, but a cash or check refund if returning in stores
  • Member dividends are only refundable by check
  • By-mail returns for in-store purchases will receive a refund by check

For in-store returns, REI will issue the refund immediately; for mail-in returns, REI will issue the refund as soon as it receives the item and approves the return. Refund checks may take seven to 10 days to arrive by mail.

How to Return Shoes at REI

Whether you made your original purchase online, by phone, or at an REI store, you can return it to a store or by mail.

For in-store returns, bring the item, the original packaging, the tags, and proof of purchase to the customer service desk during regular store hours.

To make a return by mail, securely package the shoes for shipping. You are responsible for the cost of return shipping.

Include the tags, invoice or store receipt, your contact information, the reason for the return, and the original product packaging in your shipment and send the package to:
