Walmart DVD & Blu-ray Movie Return Policy Explained

Walmart storefront

Short Answer — Walmart accepts returns of unopened DVDs and Blu-rays within 90 days of purchase. You cannot return an open DVD or Blu-ray unless it is damaged or defective. You may need to provide the receipt for a movie return, but if you paid with a debit or credit card, the store might be able to look up your purchase without the receipt.

Walmart DVD and Blu-ray Return Policy

You can return movies bought in-store or online from Walmart to any Walmart location within 90 days of purchase.[1]

The policy is the same for DVDs and Blu-rays. Returns are not available for Walmart-Vudu Video On Demand movie rentals or purchases; all Vudu sales are final.[1]

To confirm adherence to the corporate policy, we called Walmart’s corporate customer service department and Walmart stores in Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, and Oregon.

DVD Return Requirements

Movie returns should be unopened unless the discs are defective; if the disc is scratched, broken, or doesn’t play, you can return or exchange it when opened as long as it’s in its original packaging. (See our related article for more information on Walmart’s return policy for opened items.)

Store associates added that you’ll need to show your original receipt to return a defective DVD, but Walmart doesn’t require a receipt for all movie returns. Some stores may even be able to look up your purchase if you paid with a debit or credit card.[2]

If you don’t have your receipt and the store is unable to look it up, you will need to show a valid, government-issued photo ID at the time of return. See our dedicated article for more information on Walmart returns without the receipt.

Keep in mind that return policies can vary slightly by location at the discretion of the store manager; one of the stores we contacted said it would not accept DVD or Blu-ray returns without a receipt, even if unopened. Additionally, Walmart may deny non-receipted returns worth over $50, especially if you originally paid in cash. Store managers have the final say for any return.

How to Make a Return

Generally, to make a return, you’ll just need to bring the DVD to Walmart with the original packaging and form of payment.

If you purchased the DVD or Blu-ray online, you can bring it to any Walmart store or mail in your return.

To start a mail-in return, log into your Walmart.com account, look up your order, and print the prepaid return shipping label. You will need to send the disc back, with the original packaging, within 90 days.[2]

For specific information on returning items from Walmart.com third-party marketplace sellers, you may need to contact the seller directly — see Walmart’s Marketplace return policy webpage for more information.

DVD Refunds

With a receipt, your refund will be issued to the original form of payment. Returns accepted without a receipt may be refunded in cash or via store credit; typically, if the value of the return is over $25, you will receive store credit.

Keep in mind that to return a DVD without a receipt, you must have the original packaging for associates to scan. Non-receipted returns will need to pass Walmart’s computerized refund verification process.
