Short Answer
Walmart’s standard return policy allows returns within 90 days, but store managers have the authority to accept returns after 90 days on a case-by-case basis. If the store approves your return, you’ll usually receive your refund to a Walmart gift card.
What Is the Walmart Return Policy After 90 Days?
Walmart’s standard return policy allows returns of most items within 90 days of purchase or delivery (as previously reported).
However, because store managers have final authority over in-store returns, Walmart may allow you to return an item after 90 days.[1]
To find out more about returning and exchanging items after 90 days, we contacted Walmart store locations in New York, Michigan, Kentucky, North Carolina, and Virginia; we’ve detailed our findings below.
Requirements
After 90 days, store associates advise requesting a return without the receipt. A receipt showing that you made the purchase more than 90 days ago will prove that the item is past the standard return window, and the store will be less likely to approve your return.[1]
When making a return without the receipt, you’ll need to show a photo ID, such as a driver’s license or state-issued non-driver identification card.[2]
All returns without the receipt must pass Walmart’s refund verification process (as previously reported). Note that Walmart does track returns and may deny your transaction if you frequently make returns without the receipt.
Your return should also include the item’s original packaging. This will allow the store to scan the barcode and verify that the item is from Walmart.[1]
The box can be opened and even damaged in many cases, as long as the barcode is scannable and you provide the item and all of its accessories.
Exceptions
Even at Walmart locations that usually allow lenient returns, some exceptions must be returned within a shorter window and/or require the receipt, such as cell phones and electronics. Find more details in our research on non-receipted returns at Walmart.

Return Process and Refunds
You can return online and in-store purchases at Walmart stores.[2]
Returns are typically available during regular store hours — 6 a.m. to 10 or 11 p.m. (as previously reported) — at the customer service desk.
If Walmart approves your late return, your refund will follow the no-receipt refund policy.
Returns that pass the verification process will receive cash if the value is less than $10 and a Walmart gift card if greater than $10. You can also choose to exchange the item.[2]
Due to recent events, I am unable to return a telephone in person. Is it possible to return it by mail or online? The item is a VTech phone at $49.99. I purchased this item almost 90 days ago and I have the receipt. Please advise. Thank you.
Hello, E. Alba! Unfortunately, you cannot return items purchased in stores by mail. We contacted Walmart and were told that because its stores remain open, in-store purchases must still be returned to a store. Managers do have the final say on returns at Walmart, though, so you may want to contact your local store and see if it is making any arrangements for customers who cannot enter the store. Best of luck!
I bought a Reese Towpower Tow Bar and it broke. I want to get my money back but the assistant manager did not look up the receipt in the computer. So now what can I do?
Hello, Herman! Without the receipt, your item needs to pass Walmart’s return verification process to be eligible for a refund. Did it fail refund verification? If it did not fail and the assistant manager was just unwilling to attempt the return, you may want to try taking it to a different store in your area or contact Walmart’s corporate customer service department. (You do not need to return the item to the same store location where you bought it.) Best of luck!
