Short Answer
Places that commonly have notaries include banks (although you usually need to be a member to use the service), hotels, mobile notary companies, American Automobile Association (AAA) offices, and UPS stores. You’ll need to bring an ID, payment to cover any fees, and the documents to be signed.
What You’ll Need to Bring to a Notary
Of course, the number one thing you’ll need to have when you visit a notary public is the document you need notarized. Most importantly, know that your document must be signed in the presence of a notary in order to be legal, so you should not sign it before you arrive. If you do, you’ll have to obtain another unsigned copy of the document before the notary can approve it.
Other things you’ll need include:
- Valid ID: The notary must verify your identity before a document can be legally signed, so you’ll be required to show a valid government-issued photo identification. Forms of ID that are accepted by notaries include driver’s licenses or state-issued non-driver IDs, military IDs, valid U.S. passports, and resident alien identification cards.
- Notary fees: While some notaries provide services free of charge, others may require a small fee to notarize a document. The fees that notaries are permitted to charge vary by state and may also vary by notary service provider. For a list of state notary fees, see our research on costs for getting a document notarized.
