You can use PayPal Credit at more than 1,000 online merchants, but it is currently not accepted at any brick-and-mortar stores.
PayPal Credit doesn’t come with a physical credit card or credit card number. Instead of giving your credit card information when you want to make a purchase, you use PayPal Credit by logging into your PayPal account at checkout.
PayPal describes the process for using this form of payment in the “How do I select PayPal Credit as my payment source?” section of its FAQ.
How Do You Qualify for PayPal Credit?
To apply for PayPal Credit, you must first have a PayPal account. PayPal accounts are free to open and use, though fees may apply for certain money transfers and business transactions. You can also link your PayPal account to debit cards, credit cards, and bank accounts for online shopping and money transfers. PayPal provides an explanation of its fees online.
Since PayPal Credit is a line of credit, Synchrony Bank will consider your credit score in the qualification process. People with fair or better credit are typically approved for PayPal Credit.[1]
In addition to applying directly for PayPal Credit, when you shop at any of the online stores that accept PayPal and use your PayPal account at checkout, you’ll be given the option to apply for PayPal Credit before you finish checking out. If you’re accepted, approval is instant, and you can use your PayPal Credit account to complete the purchase.
How and Where Can You Use PayPal Credit?
For sites that accept PayPal Credit, you can choose this payment option in one of two ways. Some sites will allow you to checkout directly with PayPal. Most websites, however, do not have a direct option; you will need to select the “Check out with PayPal” option and sign in to your PayPal account. You’ll then have a choice to use either your PayPal account or PayPal Credit, then follow the prompts to complete your purchase.

I have a question to which I can’t really get a clear answer. Been trying for several hours. Does BigBadToyStore.com (BBTS) accept PayPal Credit? Not just PayPal? I just missed being able to call them at their Customer Care today. And their online help thingie doesn’t seem to want to work.
My situation is such that I am paid once a month. If I pre-order something with straight-out PayPal, payment would come directly from my bank account when the item comes in. This could get me overdrawn (badly!) if it happened mid or late in the month. PayPal Credit would allow me a ‘cushioning window’, paying BBTS without overdrawing my bank account at short notice.
Checking the stated Payment Methods at BBTS is frustrating. PayPal is listed, but I didn’t see PayPal Credit listed explicitly. I followed their Checkout for the item for several screens, but it appeared that I would have to Place Order select (blindly), then find out if I had a choice of PayPal or PayPal Credit, BBTS does give buyers the option of canceling (should it prove to be only regular PayPal allowed). But having to yell Banzai and select Place Order blindly (then maybe have to cancel two seconds later) is very frustrating.
I intend to try and call BBTS during Customer Service hours tomorrow. Unless someone here can in the meantime find out if BBTS accepts PayPal Credit. Which would put my mind at ease.
Hello, William! Since the BBTS customer service department is currently unavailable, we checked with PayPal. We were told that you should have the option to select PayPal Credit on any site that accepts PayPal.
You will be redirected from BBTS to PayPal to complete your purchase. You must choose a payment method in PayPal to complete the order — so, you won’t be charged until after you choose PayPal Credit and confirm the payment. If you already have a PayPal Credit account and do not see that option during checkout, you can contact PayPal for assistance at (844) 373-4961. Best of luck!
This morning I was given PayPal Credit so I decided to give it a try. I went on eBay and placed a order for five U.S. Mint proof coin sets. I went to checkout because I had made the seller an offer which he accepted and to my surprise the payment was denied stating the seller may not accept PayPal credit and it said something else about currency? So I had to ask that seller to cancel that order. He was mad! Then I logged into my PayPal Credit account and selected the “Shop Now” button and it took me to a site that showed several stores so I picked eBay and selected “Shop Now.” The top of the page said I was going to save 60% today only if I used PayPal credit. I scrolled down through all the items on sale and chose three and placed them into my cart. All three were rejected. What is going on and why doesn’t anyone seem to accept PayPal Credit?
This is really frustrating and about 500+ other people on eBay who all asked the same question, “How can I tell if an eBay seller accepts PayPal credit?,” feel the same way.
James
Hello, James! We are sorry to hear about your frustrating experience. Sellers on eBay are allowed to choose which payment methods they accept, and some choose not to accept PayPal or PayPal Credit.
You can see which payment methods are available for each item by looking at the item listing; below the price, you will see shipping information, payment options, and return information. If this problem persists, be sure you have entered your PayPal account details correctly. You may need to contact PayPal or contact eBay if there is an issue with your account.
Best of luck! We have updated our article to include a warning that not all eBay sellers accept PayPal Credit.
