Opening a personal bank account typically requires your Social Security number, photo ID, address, personal information, and a minimum deposit.
However, most U.S. banks will allow you to open your checking account with an Individual Tax Identification Number (ITIN) rather than a social security number if you can prove your identity and meet their other requirements.[1][2]
Below, we list the banks that accept ITINs for checking accounts.
The List
We contacted the following banks to confirm that they accept ITINs when opening personal checking accounts. We’ve included information about whether you can apply with an ITIN online and the other criteria you must meet to open an account.
You can find additional details, such as minimum deposit requirements, in our research on what you need to open a bank account.
Note that this information pertains to personal bank accounts; business bank accounts have different requirements. See our list of business checking accounts to consider for more details.
