There is no upper age limit for renting a car in the U.S.; state laws don’t include maximum ages for car rental, and rental agencies only have minimum age limits.
We confirmed this by contacting Department of Transportation representatives in Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Louisiana, Michigan, Nevada, and Texas, as well as reviewing corporate rental agency policies and contacting rental locations.
In the course of our research, we found that the following rental agencies don’t implement maximum age limits or impose additional fees for senior citizens renting vehicles in the U.S.:
- ACE Rent a Car[1]
- Alamo Rent a Car[2]
- Avis Rent a Car[3]

Other Requirements
Though there are no upper age limits when renting a car in the U.S., there are still requirements renters must follow.
You must have a current, valid driver’s license. The rental agency will also consider your driving record and any license restrictions.[12][4][16]

Additionally, you’ll likely need to use a debit or credit card when making the reservation[17][18][4] and may be asked to make a deposit (as previously reported).
International Travel
If you’re traveling internationally, some countries and rental agencies outside of the U.S. implement maximum age limits or surcharges.[19][20]
You may want to bring a medical note stating that you’re in good health and able to drive if you’re over 70.[19][20]
