Need a cash deposit car rental? Have no fear, you can make your deposit with cash! It’s more work / liability for the rental company if it lets you rent in cash, so not every one of them does it. Car rental companies that accept cash deposits are fairly rare. The rental companies that do allow you to rent with a cash deposit require you to complete more paperwork than usual, and sometimes the cash deposit can be hefty. But let’s take a look at the cash deposit car rentals to choose from.

Be aware that most car rental companies don’t accept cash but will accept debit cards as a form of payment in certain circumstances. So even if you don’t have a credit card, you can still essentially rent a car with cash.

Note: If you’re young and are without a credit score or credit card and that’s why you want to pay with cash, you may also be interested in this article about which rental car companies rent to people younger than 25.

The 11 Car Rental Companies That Accept Cash Deposits

1. Alamo

  • Some, but not many, locations accept cash, but they each have their own rules, and you have to check ahead of time.
  • If you did use cash as your initial payment method, any excess deposit money will be refunded to you by check within 15 business days of the end of the rental period.

2. Avis

Unfortunately, Avis is not a cash deposit car rental option. Avis does not accept cash at time of rental. However, Avis does accept debit cards in certain circumstances.

  • Debit cards are accepted at some locations, but you can check on your confirmation page.
  • If you use a debit card, the hold is only $100. With a credit card, the hold is the greater of $200 or total estimated charges.
  • If you use a debit card for prepayment online, it may not be accepted for the credit hold required at the time of pickup. So be sure to check with your specific location.
  • If debit card is an accepted form of payment at that location, Avis will perform a background check as well as need another form of identification.
  • Most locations accept Visa or MasterCard logo-ed debit cards if you are at least 25 years old.
  • Avis basically reserves the right to hold as much as they want based on vague “certain factors”. If they put a hold on your funds you will not have access to those funds until Avis releases the hold.
  • They will reverse the hold when you return the car.
  • In the US, debit, cash or check cards can be used at the end for final payment.
  • You can’t use a pre-paid debit or gift card at time of rental, but you can use it as a final form of payment.

3. Budget

  • You cannot book a rental car with cash, but you can pay cash at the time of pickup!
  • If you are ages 21-24, you cannot rent a car with a debit card or cash- you have to have a credit card. Sorry.
  • At certain locations, ages 25 and up can rent a car with a debit card. You can find out if your particular location will accept debit cards on your online reservation confirmation or you can search here on the location information page.
  • If you are using a debit card, Budget will probably pull your credit history, and you will need a third form of identification besides your driver’s license and debit card.
  • Always check your online reservation confirmation or contact the store where you will be renting the car just to make sure they allow debit cards.
  • There is also a surcharge for renters 21-24, and a higher surcharge for renters ages 18-20, depending on your location.

To fact check this, you here and look under “Underage Requirements at Corporate-operated Locations”.

4. Dollar Rent a Car

6. Fox Rent a Car

Present a valid international license along with a current valid license from same country as passport. 4. Present a return airline itinerary with confirmation of return travel date. • If you meet that first set of criteria and you pass the credit check, then you must have enough funds on your debit card to cover the rental plus a $150 hold. If you don’t pass the credit check then you must present a major credit card to reserve your car.

7. Hertz

Need a cash deposit car rental? Look no further than Hertz. Hertz is indeed one of the car rental companies that accept cash deposits.

  • Actual cash rentals are accepted here! You just have to get a Hertz-specific Cash Deposit Identification Card, which takes around 30 days to receive. So if you need a cash card be sure to plan ahead!
    • Cash rentals – which require an up-front deposit of cash – are accepted from customers who have obtained a Cash Deposit Identification (ID) Card. Applications for a Cash Deposit ID Card are available from Hertz.com. Applicants must be 21 years of age or older (18 in Michigan and New York) and the application process can take approximately thirty (30) days – except as otherwise required by law. There is a US$15 nonrefundable processing fee which offsets the cost to have a modified credit check performed on the applicant.

  • Debit cards issued with a Visa or MasterCard logo are accepted at many places outside of certain areas:
    • Debit cards are not accepted at the outset of a rental to qualify for rentals in the New York Metropolitan Tri-State Area and the areas of Hartford, CT, Philadelphia, PA, Boston, MA, Detroit, MI, and selected locations in the Baltimore, MD area unless you are a Gold Plus Rewards member using a debit card in your Gold Plus Rewards profile or it is an Insurance Replacement rental.  Debit cards are also not accepted at the outset of a rental to qualify for a rental at selected locations in the Providence, RI area for customers with a foreign driver’s license (a driver’s license not issued by a jurisdiction in the United States) unless the customer has in his or her name a current return airline ticket.  Also, debit cards are not accepted to qualify for rentals to customers under 25 years of age at Hertz Off-Airport locations not in the areas noted above unless you are a Gold Plus Rewards member using a debit card in your Gold Plus Rewards profile or it is an Insurance Replacement rental.  In addition, prepaid or store value cards are not accepted at the outset of a rental to qualify for rentals at any location.

  • Most locations that do accept debit cards will perform a credit check.
  • If your credit check passes, you must have at least enough funds on your debit card to cover the hold of up to $200, and you have to have another form of identification besides your driver’s license and the debit card you are using.
  • You can always use a debit or prepaid card to pay for your car at the time of return.

All of this information can be found in the Hertz Rental Terms.

11. U-Save

  • Policies for payment will vary considerably among different franchises of U-Save.
  • At some locations, customers may be able to use either a debit card or cash for the rental deposit, but the details will depend on the individual franchise.
  • For example, the Rock Hill, SC location requires customers to make arrangements by phone if they wish to rent with a cash deposit.
  • To find out if cash or debit card deposits are accepted at the destination where you plan to rent, visit the U-Save website to find a location. Then choose Location Website to reach the web page for that particular franchise. You can use the Contact form on this page to inquire about debit card or cash deposits.

Conclusion

You should always check with your specific desired location to see if it accepts cash or a debit card to reserve your vehicle. If you are dead set with renting a car with cash, you really need to plan ahead, or hold citizenship in some country other than the U.S. Remember that, regardless of where you rent with cash or a debit card, you will need multiple forms of identification. If you rent with a debit card you still need to have good credit.
