One-Way Cargo Van & Small Truck Rentals (Some With Unlimited Miles)

Cargo van driving on a rural highway

When you need to move furniture, equipment, or other belongings, you’ll likely need a cargo van or small truck.

If you need to move long distances, a one-way rental will be far more convenient than a rental that you need to return to the same location where you picked it up. There are several national rental companies that offer this service.

What We Recommend

For the best one-way van and truck rental options, as well as a full range of moving equipment, consider renting with Penske. Penske is the only company that offers unlimited mileage for one-way rentals. It also typically allows drivers as young as 18 to rent.

U-Haul is another good option for renting trucks of all sizes for one-way trips — it has comparable pricing and allows interstate travel and young renters — though it does not offer unlimited mileage.

The List

Below, we list the companies that offer one-way rentals for cargo vans and trucks. For each company, you can opt to have different pick-up and drop-off locations during the reservation process.

Be sure you input both your pick-up and drop-off locations when you make the reservation so you know you’re getting the proper rental type.

While specific mileage costs and fees can vary by location and other terms of your rental, all rental companies except Penske do have some sort of per-mile charges on one-way rentals.

Typically, there will be a daily maximum number of miles allowed; after the maximum, you’ll pay more for your rental per mile. Because these fees vary, they often aren’t disclosed until you enter information for your specific rental; be aware of this while booking your reservation.

We’ve ordered the list below starting with the best overall options.

This is crazy. I have to move some personal mementos that are priceless to our family but a truck is way to big and I don’t trust anyone to move it. Previous bad experiences make it hard to hire someone else to move this. Why are cargo vents impossible to rent ?

  • Charbs

Why does the title of this article mention one way cargo van rentals when THEY DON’T EXIST? The editor even admits it!

      Hi Charbs,

I understand your frustration because there’s currently no one-way cargo vans available (that we know of). However, we have decided to include the term ‘cargo van’ in the title because we found that some readers use the term more broadly to include different types of trucks. Your comment is a valid one, so we decided to make it very clear in the beginning of the article that we currently don’t know of any company that offers the Sprinter-type of cargo van for one-way rentals. Thanks for your feedback!

I recall moving cross-country with a U-Haul pickup, but unfortunately they don’t offer that anymore. I can’t find anything smaller than a 10-foot truck at any of the suggested companies. Might just be the requested dates though, as I’m leaving on the last day of the month. It’s so frustrating! A van is the perfect size. I won’t even be able to halfway fill a small truck. The U-Haul is about $450, which isn’t so bad, but after insurance and gas it’s over $700. Sure adds up quickly. I’ve resigned myself to the fact that moving is expensive, but this seems to be an untapped market. Glad I stumbled across this page so I can stop banging my head against the wall at least.

Do you know any truck rental company that rents me a mini cargo van (something similar to u-haul 9′ cargo van) to carry a small load of goods (5-6 luggages + 2 carton boxes of around 250 lb from Tucson, AZ to Buffalo, NY oneway with 4 passengers on it? It may sound insane and there may be better options. but we are still excited to do it. Please suggest.

      Hi Prax,

We have been unable to find any one-way cargo van rentals. Good alternatives for many include mini-vans, pickup trucks, or small moving vans.

Is there a company who would rent a one way cargo van from US to Canada with a drop off in Canada. I know PENSKE does not let a drop off in Canada

      Hi Mary,

Unfortunately, we were not able to locate a company that would provide you with a one-way cargo van rental from the U.S. to Canada.

  • Enbee

Hi, just wanted to add a correction: I just got done chatting with UHaul, and they said that they don’t rent out cargo vans for one-way rentals, either. It sounds like no one does these days. Frustrating!

      Hi Enbee,

You’re absolutely right! I’m so sorry for any frustration or inconvenience that the article may have caused. I reached out to U-Haul customer support and verified that only 10′ trucks and larger are available for one-way rentals. I’ve updated the article accordingly.

It seems that in some cases, a rental car company like Alamo or National Car Rental may be the way to go for a one-way cargo van rental. (There may be limitations on where this is available even at those companies, so it’s worth checking with the particular location you plan to rent from to be sure this is an option.) Best of luck as you’re looking for a rental, and please let me know if I can help!

I’m 23, and I need a one way cargo van to move 643 miles, but I’m tight on cash and I have to move ASAP.

      Hi Robert,

Budget Truck and U-Haul may be two of the best options for prioritizing budget while still being able to rent as an under-25 driver. You can visit the Budget Truck locations list and the U-Haul location finder to see if there are service centers for these companies near your Point A and Point B, and to check the specific age-related policies from the locations where you’ll be renting (keep in mind that Budget Truck does not rent to drivers under 24 at all locations). You can also get a specific quote with both of these companies to see which one will be the cheapest. If you’re exploring options besides a cargo van for your move, you may also consider taking a look at our article about the cheapest ways to move across the country. I hope this helps, and best of luck with your move!

  • Deb W.

I checked with each rental company and they don’t offer a one way cargo van rental.

First Quarter Finance | Hillary M. Miller

      Hi Deb,

I’m sorry to hear you’re having trouble finding a cargo van! I apologize for any confusion with the article — I do see that Penske only has trucks available for rent rather than cargo vans, and I’ve updated the article accordingly. It does look like U-Haul, Budget, National, and Alamo have cargo vans available for one-way rental, at least in specific locations. If your dates are flexible at all, you may consider checking cargo van availability for a different date at any of these companies. Best of luck!

    • Plumhunter

Same here – only could get a truck from any rental company – budget, hertz, penske, enterprise, uhaul. None offered a van one way long distance. I am going from Baltimore to Maine. Had to settle on a small truck.

      Hi Nicholas,

I’m sorry for not listing this information earlier. But now if you look at the last line for each company, there’s an option ‘Click here to see if there’s a ‘xyz’ rental location’ near you.
