You must return an item from HomeGoods, Marshalls, or T.J. Maxx to a store location of the same brand where you purchased it. While the same parent company owns all three, each brand operates with a separate inventory system.
Can You Return HomeGoods to T.J. Maxx or Marshalls? Vice Versa?
HomeGoods, T.J. Maxx, and Marshalls are owned by the same company (The TJX Companies), but each store has its own inventory system. Because of this, returns must go back to the store brand of purchase, customer service representatives told us.
The only exceptions to this are Marshalls and T.J. Maxx locations that have HomeGoods areas inside the stores — you must return HomeGoods items purchased in these areas to the store brand of purchase, not a separate HomeGoods store.
We spoke with HomeGoods, Marshalls, and T.J. Maxx stores in California, Idaho, Michigan, South Carolina, and Texas; all locations we called confirmed this company policy.
Return Process Across the TJX Companies
All stores owned by The TJX Companies allow you to return items in new condition with your original receipt within 30 days of purchase. You can either exchange the item or receive a refund.

While you cannot return HomeGoods items to T.J. Maxx or Marshalls (or vice versa), you can make your return at any store location of the brand where you originally purchased the item, customer service representatives said.
Online Order Returns
For all TJX brands, you can typically return items purchased online to any store location of the respective brand unless otherwise noted on the receipt or order confirmation.
You can also return online orders by mail using the return shipping label on your receipt.
One exception to the usual 30-day time limit for returns is Marshalls, which allows you to return online orders (either to a store or by mail) within 40 days of your order date.
If you have your receipt and meet all of the requirements detailed above, you will receive a full refund to your original method of payment.
However, if you want to return an item and it has been more than 30 days, you have a gift receipt, or you don’t have any receipt, you will receive a store credit.
You may get a cash refund if you paid with a check and you return your item more than 10 days after the original purchase; before 10 days, you will receive merchandise credit.
Note that if you do not have your receipt, an associate cannot look it up for you. However, for future purchases, all TJX brands offer the option to request an email receipt along with a printed receipt when you check out. Find out more about this in our research on the T.J. TJX brands use a refund verification system that tracks returns. There is no set limit on returns, but individual returns are subject to system approval.
Additionally, T.J. Maxx stores require a valid photo ID for returns with no receipt.
