Short Answer: American Eagle Outfitters accepts returns on items without tags. There is no set time frame for returns, but for a full refund, you’ll need to have the receipt. American Eagle Return Policy Without Tags, etc.
American Eagle Outfitters has a flexible return policy that allows for items without tags and clothes that have been worn, several customer service representatives confirmed. However, the items cannot be washed. American Eagle does not have a set time limit for returns, such as 14 or 30 days after purchase; it allows returns at any time.
Note that there are exceptions for swimsuits that have a hygiene safety seal and underwear. These items are returnable, but cannot be worn; they are only eligible for return in new condition with the hygiene safety seal intact.
How to Return
In-store purchases must be returned to a store. Online purchases can be returned in-store or by mail. This policy includes online-only items, clearance, and sale items. Regardless of where you bought the items, you can return them at any American Eagle Outfitters, Aerie, AEO Factory, or Tailgate location.
For returns by mail, American Eagle requests the items be put back in the original packaging, if possible. Mark the items you are returning on your invoice, along with the reason you’re returning them, and send them to the American Eagle Outfitters Returns Department.
To receive a full refund to your original method of payment, you will need to provide a receipt, confirmation email, or invoice. You can show the email or invoice on your mobile device or print a copy. If you paid with a credit card and plan to return the item to a store, you’ll also need to show the card used to make the purchase.
If you don’t have a receipt, you can return items for store credit. You will need to show a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license or state ID. Your credit will be for the current price of the item and will not include the original shipping costs for online items.
For returns by mail, refunds will take about five to seven days to process after American Eagle receives the item(s).

Other Stores with Flexible Return Policies
American Eagle isn’t the only clothing store with a flexible return policy. Here are a few others:
- Gap, Old Navy, and Banana Republic are owned by the same parent company and share a flexible return policy. Gap, Old Navy, and Banana Republic only require tags on swimwear and sunglasses returns. All returned items should be unwashed and unworn and must be returned within 45 days of purchase. An invoice, receipt, or the credit card used to make the purchase is required for a refund.
- L.L. Bean has a generous one-year timeline for returns, no tags required. You will need proof of purchase to get a refund or make an exchange. Proof of purchase can be a receipt, a packing slip, or a record of your purchase in L.L. Bean’s computer system. L.L. Bean returns and exchanges can be made in-store or by mail.
- Nordstrom has a very inclusive return policy. With the exception of some special-occasion dresses and designer items, items can be returned without tags. There is no time limit for returns or exchanges. Nordstrom also has a “no questions asked” return policy, meaning it doesn’t require a reason for the return.
