Short Answer — H-E-B cashes checks and money orders for fees starting at $3. Check cashing is available at about 70% of H-E-B stores. The grocer also sells Western Union money orders for a fee of $0.69 each. Below, we answer more questions about H-E-B’s check cashing and money order services.
H-E-B Check Cashing Policy
H-E-B will cash government, payroll, insurance, dividend, money orders, and cashier’s checks at participating locations in its Business Centers.
When cashing a check, you can choose to either receive the funds in cash or load them onto an H-E-B Netspend Prepaid Visa Debit Card.[1]
To cash a check, you’ll need a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license.[2]
Note that most (but not all) H-E-B stores offer check cashing. Of the locations we contacted, about 70% said they could cash checks.
Since not all H-E-B stores include a Business Center and not all Business Centers offer the same services, it’s best to call your local store to see whether it can cash your check before visiting.
Limits and Fees
H-E-B’s check cashing fees start at $3 but vary based on the check’s face value.[1] The amount limit varies by store location.[3]
Note that H-E-B uses a check validation system, which may also limit the number of checks you can cash per day to two or three.[2]
Hours
H-E-B store and business center hours vary by location, with some Business Centers open from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. or 8 p.m.[2]
You can check your nearest location’s hours using H-E-B’s store finder.

To purchase a money order or cashier’s check, do I need to have cash? Or can I use a credit or debit card?
Hello, Jennifer! While H-E-B cashes cashier’s checks, it does not issue them. For H-E-B’s Western Union money orders, you can pay with cash or a debit card. We have updated our article to include this information.
I purchased a H-E-B money order for $168.00 in 2016 but I ended up having a severe stroke. I barely got most of my functions back recently & found my money order. I didn’t fill out so it’s plain nothing on it. Can H-E-B still cash it?
Hello, Eva! Rather than cash the money order, since it is several years old, you should request a refund from Western Union. Our article on money order expiration has the details of how to check the status of your money order and request a refund. Best of luck!
can I cash a check in us currency written from a bank in Canada?
Hi Chris,
Even though it’s in US currency, HEB won’t cash a personal check drawn on Canadian banks. In fact, most stores will limit personal check cashing to local banks.
I have never been to an HEB that cashes personal checks nor does it state so on there website. So why does this article state that it does when they all say they do not cash personal checks whenever I inquire?
Hi Brad,
According to their website: “Stop by your H.E.B. Business Center to cash a check or withdraw cash from your debit card! For a fee starting at $3 you can cash your government, payroll, dividend, insurance and Western Union Money Orders that are purchased at H.E.B.” Make sure you ask to cash your checks at the business center — if you ask at the register the cashier might not know about H.E.B.’s check cashing policy, and might give you misinformation.
When does HEB PROCESS CHECKS.
Hi Marie,
They process checks daily.
What is the associated fee for a cashier check cut at HEB? Furthermore, what is dollar amount limit for one request?
Hi Hannah,
Just to clarify, are you wanting to have a cashier’s check printed at H-E-B? Unfortunately, this service is not available at H-E-B. Only financial institutions like banks or credit unions will cut a cashier’s check. HEB also does not cash cashier’s checks. If you’re looking for somewhere to cash a cashier’s check, the best place will be either your own bank or the bank that issued the check. You can read more in our article about where to cash a cashier’s check. I hope this helps!
how can i get history of checks cashed under my name or who can i contact i need it for proof of income because am in processing of buying a house
Hi Oscar,
It may be worth contacting your local HEB store to find out if that store is able to provide a history of checks cashed under your name, although it’s hard to say if the store will be able to do so. (You can use the HEB store finder to get the contact information for the store where you usually shop.) While it can’t hurt to ask, there may be easier ways of proving income. If you have stubs from your paychecks, if you have a W-2 or some other tax documentation from your job, or if you can contact your employer directly to provide documentation of income, these will likely all be easier ways to provide proof of income rather than getting a record of checks cashed under your name. I hope this helps!
If I have original money order can they do refund or reissue because money order was scribbled on or do I still have to pay and wait 6-8 weeks by sending it to western union?
Hi Trisha,
Unfortunately, the only way to have a money order reissued or to get a refund from Western Union is to go through the full inquiry process and pay the associated fee. If you have the original receipt, that should speed up the process and hopefully you’ll have a response in about 6 weeks. Sorry I couldn’t bring you better news!
My father lives in assisted living in Round Rock, Tx. The home has a weekly bus for residents to the nearby HEB store. Although HEB says it cashes personal checks, the store will not accept his checks from Woodforest Bank. The account is good and neither the bank nor the HEB Business Services center can explain why the checks are rejected. My father is 91 and this weekly trip to HEB is his best opportunity to periodically cash a small personal check.
Can anyone help?
Hi Wayne,
It’s possible that the problem isn’t with either HEB or Woodforest Bank, but the check cashing service that HEB uses to verify checks. HEB may use one of two companies for check verification: either Telecheck or Certegy. Unfortunately, both companies have numerous complaints against them from consumers whose checks have been declined without being given a reason as to why. If the HEB associate can tell your father whether Telecheck or Certegy is flagging his checks for some reason, he may be able to contact that company directly for details — but many people who have had checks denied with either company are not able to get any further information, even when they call the provided customer support phone number. If the Round Rock HEB uses neither Certegy or Telecheck, it’s possible his checks are being flagged through some other system, but to me this seems to be the most likely cause. If this is the case, there may not be much that your father can do except to visit his bank directly to cash his checks. I’m sorry I couldn’t bring you a more definite solution!
If my drivers license is expired may I use a paper identification?. I’m awaiting for the hard copy in the mail.
Hi Bee,
If you have another government-issued form of ID, like a birth certificate, social security card, or passport, that will probably be the best bet. Check cashing policies can vary from one location to the next, so if you’re unsure, it’s not a bad idea to call up your local HEB and ask what forms of ID are acceptable — that way you can be sure to bring what you need. You can get the phone number for the nearest H-E-B through the HEB store locator. I hope this helps!
Is there like a certain time that the HEB business services close? I know the store itself doesn’t close until 1:00AM…. but can you still cash a check after like 4?
Hi Crystal,
What an excellent question. Most HEB Business Centers (where checks are cashed) are open from 8 AM – 8 PM. However, some locations have slightly more limited hours. You can call 1 (800) 432-3113 and they can lookup a location near you that has the best hours for you. This resource is available from 8 AM – 6 PM. Of course, calling the HEB stores near you directly also works.
