Getting cash back at the register allows you to skip a trip to the bank or ATM and instead get the cash you need while checking out at your favorite store.
While some stores only allow small cash-back amounts, such as $10 or $20, others like Albertsons, Food Lion, Kroger, Safeway, and Walmart give up to $100 or more.
For the list of stores that give the most cash back at the register, see below.
How to Get Cash Back
Traditional registers and self-checkout machines provide a simple way for you to get cash back at the register while paying for your purchase.
When paying with a debit card, you’ll see the option to get back after you swipe or insert your card and can select the amount you want back.
Most stores don’t have a minimum purchase amount, so you can buy any single item — even one costing less than $1 — and still receive cash back.
You can receive cash back when paying with a debit card, and in some cases, you can also get cash back when paying with a credit card or personal check.
Stores may or may not charge a fee for getting cash back at the register; it’s often a convenience they provide customers at no charge. However, some stores do charge fees of $1 to $4.
Cash Back With a Credit Card
Credit cards usually don’t allow for cash back, but the Discover Cash Over feature lets Discover cardholders get up to $120 cash back in 24 hours, with no additional cash withdrawal fees.
Note that while Discover sets a limit of $120, the amount you can withdraw will also depend on the store’s cash-back policy — if you visit a store that allows less than $120 cash back, you won’t be able to exceed the store’s limit.
See our list of stores that take Discover.
Cash Back With a Personal Check
Some stores allow you to get cash back using a personal check. You’ll write the check for the amount of your purchase, plus the amount of cash back you want.
For example, if your purchase total is $3.72 and you want $20 cash back, you can make out a check for $23.72, and the cashier will give you $20 in cash.
