Walmart Electronics Return Policy: Time Limit, Rules, Exceptions, etc

Short Answer: You have 30 days to return most Walmart electronics with the receipt and the original packaging. There are exceptions for pre-and post-paid cell phones, which have a return window of 14 days, and final sale items, which are not returnable. For more information on the electronics return policy at Walmart, see below.

What Is Walmart’s Return Policy on Electronics?

Walmart’s standard return policy allows you to return online and in-store purchases of electronics with the original receipt and packaging within 30 days of purchase or delivery. However, return time limits are ultimately at the discretion of the store manager, a corporate customer service representative said.

If you do not have your receipt, note that Walmart uses a refund verification process for no-receipt returns. Additionally, many Walmart stores are open 24 hours but only accept returns during certain times; our article details the standard return hours at Walmart.

We contacted stores in Arizona, Colorado, Missouri, Nebraska, and Virginia to verify the Walmart electronics return policy. All Walmart locations we spoke with adhere to the standard return policy (as detailed in our previous research).

Electronics Eligible for Return Within 30 Days

Electronics Return Exceptions

The following items are not eligible for return:

  • Cell phone minutes or any item with an electronic PIN
  • Download cards for video games
  • Software via eDelivery
  • New or opened personal intimate massagers

Also, pre-and post-paid cell phones are only eligible for return within 14 days of purchase (as previously reported).

Exchanges

Items eligible for return are also eligible for exchange within the same period, and the same general guidelines apply (e.g., the receipt is required). The one exception is for media, such as games, movies, and music; see the details of Walmart’s media return and exchange policy.

When exchanging for a different item rather than a replacement of the same item, you must return the original item with the receipt, then complete payment for the new item. If it is not an even price exchange, you will either pay the remaining balance of the new item or receive a refund for the price difference.

Warranty Returns

If you purchase a warranty on an item you decide to return, or you wish to cancel the warranty, you can do so within 30 days of purchase for a full refund. After 30 days, you will receive a prorated refund for the remaining policy time.

If you cancel or return an online order, your protection plan should automatically cancel. If you replace the item within 30 days, the protection plan will transfer to the new item. If you replace the item after 30 days, you should request to cancel the protection plan on Walmart’s website or by calling Walmart customer care at (800) 925-6278.

Electronics Recall Returns

If your Walmart electronics purchase is recalled, you typically don’t need the receipt, all components, or the original packaging to return the item. The rules and regulations for each recalled item will vary, so you should contact your local Walmart to determine how to proceed.
